SECOND ESSAY GUIDELINES

(600 - 800 words)

Before class on Thursday, review FEEDBACK ON YOUR FIRST ESSAY

Bring to class on Thursday: pens, pencils, paper, printouts of the two essays below, your Reference Guide and your two pocket readers, Argument and Writing Across the Curriculum; dictionary/thesaurus.

You will have the entire period on Thursday 9/22/05 to work on your essay. You may bring any notes you wish. If you prefer you may complete the essay at home in order to use a word processor, so you may read the final draft aloud and make corrections, in order to solicit help from a friend or parent. Remember, everyone benefits from a good editor. Completed at home, or in class, your essay should follow the MLA format found in your Reference Guide, including a cover page, no ripped pages, and stapled. You will be graded on the format.

The assignment is this. I want everyone to log on to two sites below, read the essays on homework you find there, print them out, take notes, mark them up. Bring all your notes to class on Thursday and staple them to your final draft.

The sites are:

  1. HOMEWORK - A Cruel Hoax, Part 1
  2. HOMEWORK - A Cruel Hoax, Part 2

Read these two essays and then critically evaluate them in your essay.

Begin by writing something that approximates:

In this essay I am going to summarize and discuss (three to five) of the main ideas found in two online essays I have read about homework. The two essays are titled "Homework, A Cruel Hoax Part One and Two." (1) (see below)

The (Three to five) ideas I will discuss are:

1. How homework drives wedges between parents and children.
2. ...
3. ...
4. ...
5. ...

The first point is that homework is a cruel hoax because it drives many wedges between parents and children. Discuss and fill in with information from the articles as well as your own thoughts and feelings. Use at least five direct quotations and appropriate footnotes using the MLA format described in your "Reference Guide," page 373. You can write something like, "I really agree/disagree with Mr. Donaldson when he says..."

The second point...

The third point and etc...

In conclusion, I liked or disliked these articles because... I agree or disagree with these articles because... These articles made me think that... This article made me feel that... I liked or disliked these articles because... I liked or disliked this assignment because...
